Borough Manager Stephen Hietsch has negotiated an agreement to consolidate the Cumberland Goodwill and Empire Friendship fire companies.

The new fire company will keep the Empire Friendship name and be located at its spacious 177 Spring Road station. The third borough fire company, Union Fire Company, will continue to operate unchanged at 35 W. Louther St.

While conceding it is not the ideal scenario he envisioned when the consolidation talks started earlier this year, Hietsch said he is pleased the borough will save $111,906 in the 2010 fire department budget.

Cumberland Goodwill Fire Chief John Heberlig said the decision to sacrifice his fire company was difficult.

“It was a pretty hard decision because we basically lost everything, the building, the name, the number,” Heberlig said. “It was a hard decision but we looked at the overall big picture. It’s the best for the community and the areas we serve.”
